There’s More Behind a Rubbish Removal Quote Than Londoners Might Think

From disposal fees to traffic and the type of waste you’re disposing of, a rubbish removal quote involves more than the time it takes to load a van.

For many, rubbish removal can look relatively straightforward. A team arrives, loads your rubbish into a van and drives away.

Even for collections that take 20-30 minutes, it’s easy to assume the price reflects only those few minutes of labour. But in reality, it’s much more than that.

The costs of removing rubbish start before the team arrives and continue after the van leaves your property. The waste might be out of your hands, but it’s still in ours.

That’s why at EnviRecycle, our rubbish removal prices are based on factors like the volume, weight, type of waste, access requirements, labour and disposal fees, which is why two piles of rubbish that are roughly the same size can result in two different prices.

Waste disposal isn’t free for rubbish removal companies

One of the highest costs our professionals face is part of the journey customers never see — and that’s what happens to the waste afterwards.

A licensed rubbish removal business does not simply collect a customer’s waste and dispose of it for free at resident-only household recycling centres. It must go through an appropriate authorised waste facility, where disposal charges depend on the weight and materials included.

Therefore, the cost of your rubbish removal doesn’t just cover labour; it also covers transport, sorting, recycling, and legal disposal. And these costs are subject to change.

Reports have highlighted increasing charges across London waste facilities, with different prices often applying to general rubbish, rubble, plasterboard, mattresses, electrical appliances and other specialist waste streams.

The type of rubbish removed makes a big difference

Volume is one thing, but the type of rubbish is another. Ten bags of lightweight household waste are different from ten bags of broken tiles, soil, or rubble.

Heavier materials increase the overall weight of a load and are typically charged differently at disposal facilities, as they have specific recycling or disposal requirements.

For example, fridges, mattresses, electrical equipment and some other bulky items can incur additional disposal costs.

Upholstered domestic seating is another good example. Environment Agency rules require seating containing persistent organic pollutants (POPs) to be managed separately and the pollutants destroyed, rather than simply sent to landfill. This includes many sofas, sofa beds, armchairs and upholstered household chairs.

Therefore, additional sorting, transporting and specialist treatment can all affect the real cost of disposing of these items correctly.

Landfill Tax has also increased again

Another cost impacting the waste industry is Landfill Tax.

From 1 April 2026, the standard Landfill Tax rate in England increased from £126.15 to £130.75 per tonne. The lower rate for qualifying material increased from £4.05 to £8.65 per tonne.

That said, not every item a rubbish removal company collects ends up in landfill, and responsible operators aim to recycle and recover materials wherever suitable. But rising disposal and processing costs throughout the chain ultimately influence what rubbish removal companies pass on to customers.

London, as a location, makes rubbish removal more expensive

If you live in London, you’ll know that travelling a few miles does not always mean a quick journey. Waste companies must account for fuel, traffic, vehicle maintenance, insurance, and the time crews spend travelling between properties and authorised waste facilities.

Then, there is the issue of parking.

A straightforward ground-floor collection with parking directly outside is very different from removing the same amount of rubbish from a fourth-floor flat, carrying it down several flights of stairs and transporting it along the street to a van a distance away. Restricted access, parking charges and longer loading times can all affect the final cost.

That is why we ask customers to tell us about factors such as stairs, restricted parking, and difficult access when requesting a quote, so we can build them into your cost.

Unusually cheap quotes can be a warning sign

We understand a good price and a deal. But the lowest rubbish removal quote is not always the best deal. Legitimate waste businesses have unavoidable costs to collect and dispose of rubbish correctly and safely.

Illegal operators not registered as a waste carrier with the Environment Agency can undercut legitimate companies by avoiding authorised disposal facilities altogether and dumping rubbish illegally, and this can eventually fall back on the customer, who’s responsible for checking credentials and ensuring their waste is disposed of correctly.

How to keep rubbish removal costs accurate

Accurate information leads to a more reliable quote – and in this instance, photos are particularly useful.

At EnviRecycle, we ask customers to send photos of the rubbish they want removed, which lets us estimate the volume, weight, and type of waste before we arrive.

Keeping different types of waste separate where practical can also make the collection easier to assess.

Do not hide rubble, electrical items, or specialist materials under ordinary household rubbish. The more accurate the information you provide, the easier it is for a removal company to give you an accurate estimate.
